Help to Increase Reading Skills
Scan, Read and Review
To help prepare you for what you are about to read and to get a quick review of the information, scan the reading and look at the boldface terms, charts, graphs, headings & subtitles, maps, photos & illustrations, summary, and review questions. Scanning provides you with information in a short amount time. It makes it easier when more understandable when you actually do read.
Be a Detective
Have a purpose when you read to help you stay focused and understand what you have read. Make sure you ask yourself questions while you read. “What does this word mean?, Why is this event important?, etc.” As you read, look for answers to your questions. When you finished reading you should have answered all of your question and the review questions. Write down notes from your reading to help increase retention.
After you have finished reading, review by scanning again by looking at the bold words, italicized words, charts, pictures, headings, etc. This will help you retain information when it is time to review for the test.
